BURT'S MUSINGS

Changing Lanes

I have often been reticent about posting on social media or websites. For years, I hesitated to make my thoughts public. When I worked in the field of psychology, offering therapeutic treatment and psychological evaluations, I felt it was safer to remain incognito outside the office. But now that I am no longer in that role, I have chosen to step out of the cave of anonymity.

As I reflected on Jesus’ ministry, I realized He used every opportunity and setting to share His message with those willing to listen. When He traveled through Samaria, He stopped at a well in the city of Sychar (John 4:5–6), a name meaning “drunken” or “falsehood.” There, He sat where people came to draw water. That well functioned like the social media of its day: a gathering place where news, conversation, and ideas were exchanged. In many ways, it was the ancient equivalent of the office watercooler. For Jesus, it became a pulpit.

Whether it was a rock, a shoreline, or the bow of a boat, Jesus transformed everyday places into platforms to reach others. If He sought every possible avenue to spread truth, why shouldn’t I also use the tools available today? Websites and social media can be used for good or for harm, but in the right hands, they can carry light into the digital marketplace of ideas.

I’ve decided it’s time to change lanes, because if the message is worth sharing, then every medium is worth using.

And so, like the woman at the well, I’m ready to draw and to pour.
